Remodeling a Central Richmond 3 Bedroom House - Tapping into Inherent European Elegance

Built in 1916, this house is pretty well laid out for modern living. The house is currently under contract, but the list price was 1.695 Mil.

Front facade has a lot of character - but needs a coat or two of paint.

Adorable entry lobby with skylight above

Original fireplace and cabinets in tact. Fireplace surround tiles are a little too date and could use an update.

Dining room wall paneling has a lot of character - I would keep it!

I looked to the art deco villa, Villa Necchi, for inspiration. Built in the 1930’s by Italian architect, Piero Portaluppi, the villa is celebrated due to the architect’s unique combination of the clean straight lines of the ‘International Style’ with the rich decorative materials typical of Art Deco Design. I think it’s a relevant reference for remodeling this house, because this combination of styles definitely still appeals to our contemporary taste for simplicity, without sacrificing warmth. This approach will build on and embrace the existing historical features of the house.
